HIGHER PLACES DIMENSIONS.

Dimensions….
underground music in an abandonded fort.

we arrived into the small town of Pula, Croatia, after a short trip from Northern Italy through Slovenia and across the Croatian border early Friday afternoon, ready to go. We had heard about the festival sight from our friends before but it really has to be seen to believe it….

Friday afternoon we spent relaxing inside the festival site chilling out  at the amazing beach stage, where most people were either dancing to Jeremy Underground, or recovering from a heavy night previous beach side or in the crystal clear Croatian waters. We couldn’t wait to check out the Fort with music starting from 8pm and finishing some 12 hours later…..

Our first taste of Dimensions came at the main arena, the Clearing with Paranoid London, before a general walk around to get our bearings, visiting, The Void stage, Mungos Hifi and The Ballroom. Seriously though, Dimensions is a festival unlike any other, set in an abandoned Fort, full of small passageways criss-crossing a hilltop and with every nook and crannie, every stage is worked around the Fort to maximize the festival’s appeal, from the Ballroom inside a 75 person limit circular stone room, to undoubtedly one of the most special locations any festival can boast, the Moat, a cavernous, long and dark hallway crammed with 700 or so people, leading downwards into a pit surrounded by high walls and a menacing stage, it has to be seen to believed. We headed straight to the Moat to catch the end of Lone and then one of the surefire highlights of the whole weekend, Boddika. The sounds of Boddika mixed with the location was one not to forget a perfection of visual and aural senses. We stayed inside the Moat to catch some of OBjekt, again a highlight before running over to see Detroit Legends Underground Resistance tear up the main stage. Over to The Void we ventured to catch the Bodytonic Crew and the founding father of House music himself Lil Louis who never disappoints with his soulful house music blaring long into the night. Hanging out with our man Daniel Avery as we were led back down into the Moat we were high on anticipation but in reality Mr Avery contributed to one of the biggest letdowns of the weekend, his sparingly minimal sounds not reverberating with us unfortunately this time. We closed out our first night with Belfast boys Bicep, a surefire hit and it was back to Pula to recover for day 2.

Down to the beach early we went, and we weren’t disappointed as Romare, tore Croatia a new one, a perfect setting for his sun kissed sweet grooves, followed by an equally amazing jazz blowout from BadBadNotGood, under the Croatian sunshine, cool vibes all round. Saturday we again moved early up to the fort to catch the Egloo recordings showcase with head honcho Alexander Nut setting us up and Floating Points showing signs of why the hype is real and treated us to some pieces of his new album to released late 2015. We took a more relaxed view of proceedings Saturday getting a general flavour of the festival and visiting smaller stages, checking out Loefah and his history of Chicago Set, before delving back into the depths of the only place to be The Moat stage to catch an intense Legowelt live set and closing out for the night, our biggest Dimensions discovery, Dutch techno wizard Intergalactic Gary. Sauntering back down the hill, we caught Space Dimension Controller to end day 2 on a high.

Our 3rd and final day, Sunday was the bad boy lineup we had been waiting for, and arriving a little later than usual, we took in some funk, some rnb, some jazz at the beach, such was the musical diversity to behold. We booked ourselves in for the final of 12 boat parties, another feature of Dimensions, later on that day leaving at sunset and returning later on that night. We had no idea what to expect, out in the middle of the Croatian sea for over 3 hours but it absolutely blew us away. Hosting the boat were our friends the Bodytonic Crew from Dublin, who having conquered the Void 2 nights previous with Lil Louis and Bicep, we were easily entranced. Joining them on the boat was our discovery of the festival, Intergalactic Gary and Italian House legend Danielle Baldelli. A not too packed boat of around 150 – 200 people, mostly Londoners mixed with friends of the Bodytonic Crew, cruising out into the Croatian sea as the sunset and night came upon us, it was intense and everyone was most certainly up for it. Indeed, we wished it could have gone all night long. Baldelli smashing it at the end with pure disco funk sounds. We had no time to reflect though as we sprinted up the hill to catch the Godfather of Funk George Clinton Parliament/Funkadelic full live band for the encore, leading a chorus of We Got the Funk you couldnt help but smile and dance away. On easily the best night of Dimensions, we escaped back to our belonging The Moat to catch Berlin Panorama Bar residents, Geigling boys, entrance everyone with their surgical, precision minimal techno. We dashed from one stage to the other as we hit up the NTS London boys closing out the festival with Baldelli on his second set and German trance and techno mastermind  and Innervisions mate Gerd Jansen, swinging back round to see the opening banging beats of Ben Klock, before closing out Dimensions the only way possible with the main man John Talabot and his Balaeric sounds taking us to higher places indeed.
