Interviste

ITALIAN VERSION

Innanzitutto come stai?

Come hai lavorato all’album?

L’album comincia con “Step on the Carousel” e disco dopo disco si trovano umori e sentimenti contrastanti; prima allegria, poi malinconia, spensieratezza e per finire “Step off the Carousel”. Cosa racconta ciascuna traccia?

Assolutamente!

E’ previsto qualche live show con l’intera band?

ENGLISH VERSION

First of all, how are you? I believe it’s quite a busy period for you, considering that your album will soon be released.

I’m very good thanks. Yeah, It is, and I’ve decided to move studio in the middle of It all, nothing like a bit of chaos, I sort of thrive of a bit of stress, not too much though.

Let’s start from the beginning, how was the “La Carousel” idea bornt?

It’s a very clear snap shot of a period in my life that can be described as tough; I was not having a good time, I felt like the time had come to stop fucking around with making music for other people , or something that would work on a particular sound system in a particular club or venue, It was time to just make a record that reflected my personality and who I truly am. There was  this huge feeling of time running out and life passing me by, it was time to stop pissing around and write a decent record. I put every drop of passion and feeling I have into this, for this part of my life I know I done my best , it might not be good enough for some people , and somebody can listen to it and think its rubbish , and thats really fine  , I just know I tried my honest best . I’m  glad that under the pressure I was having at this period I didn’t decide to start writing music that would “sell” and that to be the motivation , I really didn’t know how this would all turn out, or if even anyone would like it , but the whole experience was hugely liberating and seemed to answer a lot of issues I was having. The final piece in the puzzle was writing lyrics, something lifted once I finished making the record, like it helped me deal with things a bit better, I felt great after .

How did you work on the album? You declared that you have passed lonely moments to clarify your ideas and to find inspiration.

Some very lonely moments, not really knowing if anyone cared anymore about what I was making. The whole record kind of comes from a very dark place, in my mind I was trying to make uplifting music to bring me out of that stage of my life, hoping it could be something that could help somebody emotionally that was maybe experiencing similar things in their life, some kind of strength, I didn’t want to to be a whinge or somebody crying on a record about problems they are having, that just seems like extreme selfishness, who the fuck wants to listen to that? I wanted to offer some answers to the questions you might be having in your life not just off loading more problems onto the listener, more me trying to offer a positive resolve .

So can we say that this is your most personal work, in sense of intimacy and privacy?

In a nut shell thats exactly what It is , I just think if you cant be open and honest about the music your making what the fuck is the point ?

The album starts with “Step on the Carousel” and track by track we can find conflicting moods and feelings : first joy, then sadness, then carefree and last of all “Step off the Carousel”. What does each track tell us?

I’m not sure what each track means for other people, I know they just reflect me as a person; there were all made starting from a keyboard and just trying to play a note that resonated with the mood I was feeling at the time , then I would make that into a chord etc etc , then work on some lyrics to reflect the mood and so it went from there. I’ve used the whole carousel idea as a metaphor to everyday life , sometimes each day feels like we are just being dragged kicking and screaming round it and for other people its fun. it goes much deeper than that, but thats a simple way of putting it.

Do you believe that today there is a tendency to produce music that sells, rather than express our feeling or something that would getter represent ourselves?

Very much so , it did cross my mind when writing this record that I wanted to show people what its like to just make honest music from the heart and soul; peoples motivation seems more and more to make a career out of it and are forgetting to just make music that really moves peoples emotions and feelings. It feels like Facebook “likes” or followers on twitter are more important; some producers are even arranging their track to suit the 2 min listening window on digital sites, the thought of this is horrifying.

Now going towards the technical side, in “Le carousel” which instruments, software and hardware have been used?

I recorded on cubase , but i used so many different instruments , anything i could think of from harps, cello , guitars , bass, live percussion , xylophone  ,honestly the list goes on and on.. then all my outboard gear and plug-ins , then re-recording to get a sound i wanted, it never stopped .

Does this new album anticipate a band tour?

Very much so.

Are you going to have a live show with the band?

We have been practicing off and on for 6 months, rehearsing a lot, its sounding really tight now.

We have the release party in the MAC Belfast on the 8th and 9th of march along side an Andy warhol exhibition; its already sold out on the saturday and looks like the friday will too.  ‘Le Carousel’ image will be printed on an area of 18 feet by 18 feet. In effect it’s a massive record sleeve. Once this image has been photographed and documented it will be broken up into its individual parts and 324 limited edition vinyl records will be produced with the album’s music on it and inserted into the sleeves, which will be numbered and contain a print of the large image with a grid reference to show where theirs belonged.

I think this album is a masterpiece so this interview for me is an honour. Thank you very much, I wish you good luck in your future!

Thank you soooo much =)
