L’abbiamo incontrato venerdì scorso a Reggio Emilia, Miguel Campbell, accompagnato da Matt Huges ha gentilmente risposto alle nostre domande.

Abbiamo letto che hai avuto un anno molto impegnato, sei reduce dal tuo secondo tour australiano. Come definiresti la scena della musica House in Australia, vicina a quella europea? Ti sei divertito, ti è piaciuto? 

In Australia è molto diverso, sono molto aperti alla musica elettronica soprattutto nelle città principali come Melbourne o Sidney.

E’ stato molto bello poter andare li e suonare ciò che in questo momento è attuale in Europa e non lì, gli australiani hanno apprezzato molto questo.

E’ stato proprio proprio bello.

Dopo l’Australia ti aspetta il Messico, il particolare il BPM festival. Puoi raccontarci qualcosa di più sulla tua esperienza ad uno dei festival più ambiti da tutti i djs e clubbers del mondo?

Sono già stato l’anno scorso al BPM Festival ed è stato davvero incredibile perchè ci sono tantissime feste diverse concentate in piccole venues. Puoi davvero incontrare chiunque. Puoi vedere tutti i tuoi amici, tutti i djs in giro per la strada semplicemente camminando godendosi il momento.

Tutto questo sotto il sole in un nuovo posto in un angolo del Messico, è davvero un’esperienza incredibile.

E’ vicino all’esperienza del WMC a Miami?

No, il BPM è molto, come dire, latino.

Miami è molto più organizzato, esecutivo. In Messico tutto è molto più rilassato, comunque organizzato molto bene ma tutte le persone hanno l’obbiettivo di godersi la festa.

Passando alla tua etichetta la OUT CROSS RECORDS abbiamo visto che in Inghilterra c’è stato un party totalmente marchiato OCR, pensi potrà diventare un progetto con cui girar l’Europa?

Si, o meglio abbiamo fatto un party OCR questa estate ad Ibiza e spero di poter farlo girare nel 2014, diciamo che quello che ho pianificato sono una serie di party attraverso l’Europa ed il Nord America.

Abbiamo una data a Brighton per natale e una all’inizio di Gennaio a New York. Diciamo che è qualcosa sul quale stiamo lavorando.

La cosa più importante per me è suonare con “la famiglia” e divertirci. Attualmente la nostra musica suona bene ed è bello condividerla con tutti, non solo a casa nostra in Uk, ma ovunque in giro per il mondo.

Il progetto MAM che stasera proponi qui a Reggio Emilia è nato prima della vostra uscita su OCR o in nome di questa è nata l’esigenza di suonare insieme?

Matt ed io ci siamo conosciuti su internet. Da lì abbiamo incominciato a fare musica insieme e abbiamo creato OCR. E’ uscito il nostro progetto insieme e quando alla fine ci siamo incontrati di persona è iniziata la nostra vera e propria collaborazione musicale; in quell’occasione abbiamo suonato per un mese agli OCR party in Leeds.

Dopodiche l’etichetta era praticamente affermata e siamo passati dal non avere nessuno che sapeva chi fossimo all’occhio della ribalta. E’ stato pazzesco.

Come trovi un buon equilibrio tra i tuoi tour mondiali e la produzione musicale?

Ecco questa è una cosa con la quale sto ancora abbastanza combattendo.

Da una parte sono molto contento perchè suono 4 o 5 volte alla settimana, a volte anche di più e non ho molto tempo per stare in studio. Quello che però sto migliorando è il mio stile e la capacità di suonare perciò non credo sia tempo perso. In ogni caso conto di tornare in studio molto presto.

“Something Special” è la hit che ti ha portato al successo, succede ancora che ti venga richiesto di suonarla durante i set? La tua reazione?

Durante tutti i miei set c’è qualcuno che sul telefono scrive il titolo di “Something Special” chiedendomi di suonarla.

Le persone mi hanno detto moltissime cose belle e gentili su questa canzone e so quanto questa canzone significhi per le persone. C’è stato un momento in cui avevo obbligato me stesso a non suonarla più perchè avevo passato dei mesi a suonarla letteralmente centinaia e centinai di volte.

Era l’inizio del 2012 quando venni a Napoli, in Italia, credo fosse il 4 Gennaio e decisi di fare il mio primo set senza suonare “Something Special”. I clubber italiani non furono molto contenti e quando arrivarano alla fine del set iniziarono a gridare “ULTIMO” ma poi questo grido si trasformò in “Something Special”.

Questo è stato un segno per me che mi faceva capire che non potevo smettere di suonare questo pezzo, non adesso, perchè molte persone ci tengono a vedermi suonarlo. Quello che sto provando a fare è proporlo ogni volta in formule differenti.

Cosa ne pensi del clubbing italiano?

Verso di me il clubbing italiano è molto cambiato negli ultimi anni e credo che il motivo sia nel miglioramento dei miei set, ma credo anche che in generale il clubbing italiano stia cambiando.

Le prime volte che venivo in Italia  il locale era vuoto fino alle 3 , 3,30 della mattina ed il locale avrebbe poi chiuso per le 4.30 per cui avevamo il locale pieno solo per un’ora. Ora quando vengo in Italia la gente arriva nel locale molto prima, verso l’1 o le 2 in modo da aver più tempo da passare nel club.

Penso che il clubbing italiano possegga grande energia e uno dei miei aspetti preferiti di questo sono sicuramente i party outdoor.

Qual è il posto , la città, o il club  dove preferisci suonare?

Bella domanda. 2 posti.

Il primo tra i mie due posti preferiti dove suonare è un piccolo club che si trova in Amburgo, Germania, ed è il club di Solomun che si chiama EGO. Al massimo 200, 250 persone. Puoi trovare musica meravigliosa e ha un’atmosfera davvero elettronica.

L’altro è un club gigantesco e meraviglioso : WARUNG in Brasile.

We read that you had a busy year, you just had an australian tour. How would you define the australian house scene, close to the european one? you liked, you enjoyed it?

It’s very different in Australia because it seems to be more open to the electronic music, in the main cities like Melbourne and Sidney they have amazing scene open to electronic music.

It was a really nice time to be able to go there and play what actually represents here in Europe and they were very kind and they enjoyed the music.

It was great time to be there.

After Australia there will Mexico for u, in particular BPM Festival. Can you tell us something more about your experience at the most coveted festival from all clubbers and djs from all over the world?

I did go there last year also and it was a really amazing festival because there are more collections of parties in small venues, there are so many djs concentrated in a small area. You can meet everybody. You see all the of your friend, all of the djs to the street just walking and enjoy the time.

It’s in the sunshine, in a really new place, in a side of Mexico; it’s a really amazing experience.

Is it closer to the WMC (winter music conference) in Miami?

No, it’s finally more latinos.
Miami is a lot more corporate, organized, executive. In Mexico everything is more chilled and relaxed, still organized very well but it’s just everybody have a good time.

Moving on to your label “OUT CROSS RECORDS” we have seen that in England there was a party totally branded OCR, do you think that will be a project that will turn perhaps around all Europe?

Yes, I mean we made a OCR party in Ibiza this summer and moving in 2014, this is something I have planning to do with quite lot of parties through out Europe and also North America.

We have a gig up incoming christmas in Brighton and one in New York early in January. It’s something about we are working on and developing.

The most important thing for me that : I’m managing to play with “la famiglia“ and enjoying our self; actually the music sounds great as well so it’s nice to be able to share with everyone, not just at home in UK but everywhere around the world.

The project MAM that you also propose tonight here in Reggio Emilia was born before your output on OCR or from that occasion it was necessary to play together in parties.

What actually happened was Matt & I were friends on internet and we were making music and we created OCR, it was really I mean output for our solo project and when we finally met in person we began to collaborated on our music and at that time we were playing a monthly OCR party in Leeds.
The label was already established and than it’s just been literally  going from nobody knowing who we are to so many people knowing who we are and it’s crazy.

Were you able to find a good balance between tour dates and production?

This is something that i still struggle with. I mean in one were I really blast because I play 4 or 5 gigs a week,  sometimes more, I don’t have much time to stay in studio and I did that for the last two year but i have manage to do is developing my style of deejaying so is not been wasted time however  I’m now in a position and we want to come out this summer and I’ll back in the studio.

“Something Special” is the hit that brought you to the limelight despite your previous and career as a dj and pretty different has ever happened that during your dj sets somebody required it? in that case your reaction?

Every time during my sets somebody write on the phone and ask me to play “Something Special” this is something that I have grown used to.

People says so many kind things to me about this song and I know how much this song means to the people.

There was a time when I forced my self to I had play it no more time because i have literally played it thousands time .

It was at the beginning 2012 when I came to Naples, Italy, I think on 4th of January and i decided I’m not going to play it today and it was the first time i didn’t play it. The italians clubbers was not happy and they got to end of the party and “ULTIMO” tending to “Something Special” and they were just screaming “Something Special”. It was an indication that maybe i can’t stop playing this record right now because a lot of people specifically want it to watch me playing this record. So what I try now is developing it in a new way.

What do you think about the italian clubbing?

Italian clubbing is changed for me from the last couples of years and i think because my gigs getting better but also i can see a deep changing in that. When I started to come to Italy nobody come to the clubbing before 3 or 3.30 in the morning and the club closed at 4.30 so for one hour we have people in the club and what I fins now is the people coming into the club so a lot early in the night, 1 or 2 o’clock, so you still having much more time.

I think there’s a lot of energy within italian clubbing and my favorite aspect to the italian clubbing is outdoor parties.

 

Which is the place, town, city or maybe the specific club where you enjoy most to play?

Good question. Two places.

My favorite small club the world is in Hamburg, in Germany, the Solomun’s club called EGO. Maybe 200, 250 peolpe. It has a really good sounds and the vibe in there it’s really electric.

The other one is for me the best biggest club in the world : Warung Club in Brazil.
