Mario Basanov è un produttore lituano di particolare talento e sensibilità artistica, diventato famoso grazie alla collaborazione con il collega Vidis, da cui nacque nel 2011 l’album “Changed”. Una volta raggiunta la popolarità Mario ha abbandonato il progetto per prendere la sua strada, che lo porterà a fine 2012 a dar vita a “Journey”, capolavoro di 16 tracce con cui definisce il suo stile personale, elegante e al tempo stesso misterioso che caratterizza la sua musica. E’ un artista in continua evoluzione e sottolinea come per lui sia importante mettere al centro della propria musica i sentimenti.

Ora che sei un Dj/produttore affermato, pensi che rispetto agli inizi il tuo modo di fare musica sia cambiato in qualche modo?

Mi è sempre piaciuta musica di qualità. A prescindere dallo stile musicale che usavo, ho sempre preferito musica di alta qualità e con un buone sonorità. L’unica cosa che è cambiata ora è che posso scegliere lo stile di musica che preferisco suonare. Sono diventato più veloce nel creare musica e nell’applicare il processo tecnologico che mi serve per farla, perciò posso permettermi di ricercare l’esclusività e il mio suono personale. Dipende soprattutto dalle emozioni e vibrazioni che sento.

Parliamo del tuo album “Journey”. Da dove hai cominciato e come hai lavorato a questo progetto?

E’ il mio primo album in assoluto. Ho attraversato un lungo percorso per arrivare a concluderlo; i primi tempi facevo uscire solo singoli, poi il mio agente mi ha proposto di unire queste produzioni in un unico album. Le ho riprodotte e riorganizzate, mentre altre sono state create appositamente per “Journey”.

Non avevo esattamente idea di aver già pronto un album, ma è successo in modo spontaneo.

Come hai scelto le voci?

Difficile a dirsi. Molto spesso mi accade di finire una traccia e sentire che mi serve una voce che l’accompagni, il cantante arriva successivamente in un modo o nell’altro. Io mando loro una traccia e aspetto la loro proposta vocale, poi decido se può andare o meno. Ciò che mi spinge verso una particolare direzione e che a volte so già che tipo di vocal mi serve, maschile o femminile.

Quanto è importante nelle tue tracce la parte vocale? Senti che puoi comunicare qualcosa in più inserendola? 

La cosa più importante per me nella musica sono le emozioni. Il timbro di un cantante è altrettanto importante perché si crea con la versione strumentale del brano, poi si arrangia alla traccia rendendola completa.

Preferisci il lavoro da Dj o come produttore? 

Sono sensazioni completamente diverse. Anche quando compongo musica raccolgo le emozioni che vengono dal mondo che mi circonda. Quando suono davanti a una folla di persone, comunico con le persone che ho di fronte attraverso la musica. Entrambe le sensazioni mi danno ciò di cui ho bisogno.

Quale genere musicale ti condiziona maggiormente secondo te?

Dipende dal ritmo delle giornate che vivo, dall’ambiente in cui sono inserito, il mio stato d’animo. In questo periodo sicuramente Ame, Dixon, Heinrik Schwartz.

Come definiresti la tua musica?

E’ musica che esprime i miei stati d’animo. Io ho e creo un determinato stile, ma cerco sempre di lasciare spazio ai sentimenti.

C’è stato un ritorno fortissimo della musica house negli ultimi anni. Cosa pensi a proposito delle tendenze nella musica elettronica?

Il mio motto è “non bisogna essere alla moda, ma avere stile”. Ho la mia idea a proposito di quale musica considero buona o cattiva… ma preferisco tenermela per me.

In fondo la musica house/disco non è mai passata, forse perché essendo più melodica tende a non stancare le persone che la seguono, messa a confronto con altri generi più minimal, diciamo. Che ne pensi?

Ogni persona ha il suo genere e segue quello che preferisce. Io ora sto viaggiando molto e mi trovo di fronte ad un pubblico ogni volta diverso. Una parte di questo pubblico ancora ama la disco, ma un’altra parte, soprattutto nell’Europa occidentale, è stanca di questo genere e si sta spostando verso qualcosa di più techno. Il fatto che un genere vada più di un altro dipende dalla visione d’insieme del pubblico e dal suo punto di vista a proposito della musica da club.

Hai progetti su cui stai lavorando? Puoi anticiparci qualcosa? 

Non è ancora momento per parlarne ad alta voce. Datemi un po’ di tempo e vi farò sapere e sentire tutto. Amo parlare molto dei progetti che ho già concluso, ma non di quelli che sono ancora in fase di costruzione. Al momento sto facendo l’inventario del mio nuovo studio.. qualità infinita! Mi aspetto che questo porterà parecchi cambiamenti nel procedimento di produzione della mia musica.

Let’ say that your career kind of started to take off in early 2009. Now that you are an established DJ/Producer, you feel that your way of making music has changed? And how?

I have always liked high quality in music. And it was not important which style of music do I use – I always prefer the highest quality and good sound. It haven’t changed until now. The only thing that changed – now I can let myself chose one style of music that I like the most. I became faster in technological process in creating music. Im searching for exclusivity and my own personal sounding. Mostly it depends on my emotions and vibe that I feel inside.

Let’s talk about your latest album “Journey”. Tell us how did you work with it, where did you start from and which were your inspirations?

It is my very first album. I have traveled towards it for a long time – firstly I had single compositions, but then my agent offered me to join them in to the album. Compositions, that have been published earlier, was reproduced and arranged. Other compositions were created specially for the album “Journey”. Then I had no idea that I’ve just stated my album, it just happened itself.  Talking about inspirations, its very hard to say, because it came spontaneously. Most of the time I come to my studio and just feel vibe.

How did you choose the vocals? 

Its hard to explain. Most frequently I create a track and then if I feel that I need a vocal, the singer comes to me mystically. I just send them a track and wait for their vocals and then I decide whether I like it or not. The only thing that puts me into some kind of frames, is that sometimes i fell what kind of vocal do I need – male of female.

In your opinion, how much important are vocals in your records? Do you feel that you can communicate something more with it? Or it’s all about musicality.

The most important thing for me in music is feeling. Singers timbre is also important, because it has to tune with instrumental version of track, it has to go along with completeness of track.

What kind of feeling you perceive producing music and playing in front of thousand of people? Which one you prefer?

These two feeling are extremely different. When I compose music also my feelings comes from outside, from environment that surrounds  me. When I’m playing in from of thousand people, all feeling come from common vibe from dance-floor. I prefer both of them, because, like i said, they both are different, they both gives me what I need.

Let’s talk about your musical background. What kind of music you listen to and which one inspires you the most when producing?

Its difficult to define what kind of music inspires me.  It depends on my life rhythm, in what environment I’m in, my mood and feelings. In these days I adore “innervision” production, I am inspired by Ame, Dixson, Henric Shwartz and so on.

How would you define your music?

It can be called music of my mood. I have and create stylistic frames, but I always try to give up for emotion.

There has been a huge come back of house music in the last years. What’s your idea of music fashion and especially of electronic music trend?

I have always said ” don’t be fashionable, be stylish”. I have my own personal opinion on what is good or bad in electronic music trends, but let me keep it for myself.

Sometimes I believe that house/disco music doesn’t seem to fade out with the time and remains current in the music scene in compare to other music styles more techno or minimal, maybe because it’s more melodic and people tend no to get bored of it! What do you think?

I think that every man has his own taste and view on music. Im traveling a lot right now, so I’m performing to many different audiences. One part of it still likes disco, but other, mostly in West Europe, are bored with this style, they want something like techno. I think that it depends on whole view of people to club music.

Are there any new project on which you are working on? Could you tell us about your future targets?

I think its not the right time to speak about it out loud. Give me some time and you will know and hear everything. I always have my own targets, Im trying not to stand in one place, always move on. I like to speak speak about works and project that are already done, not about ones that are still in process. At the time I’m inventorying my new superb quality studio and I expect that it will bring some changes in my producing process.
