ITALIAN VERSION

Ciao Lakuti!

Come vanno le cose?

Alla grande! Spero per voi lo stesso! =)

Avevo cominciato a leggere riviste, come l’iconico The Face, e sognavo di trasferimi in Inghilterra.

A casa non ascolto mai musica 4/4… molto jazz, soul, pop, new wave.

Grazie mille Lakuti, ti aspettiamo!

ENGLISH VERSION

Hi, Lakuti!

We hope you’re well! How are the things going on for you?

All good ! Hope you are good as well :-)

So, you grew up in South Africa, a place that have a very different history from the european one. Which are your memories about this period?

South africa is a very complex place given our history and growing up there i guess in many ways define who i am today . i had a good life . we were not rich but we were happy despite the political turmoil in the country at the tine .  . i have a great and supportive family . i grow up surrounded by music mostly jazz because of my grandfather , funk & soul & disco , gospel because of my mother .

How was the life in there for a teen?

I was a very studious teen . really missed school whn we were on our school holidays . by the time we got back to school i had already read most of the books that were pescribed for that year . i also spent a lot time listening to music , writing lyrics , making tapes

When you decided to move to London, what was your first impression of the City?

I started reading a lot of magazines such as the oconic Face magazine at the time and dreamt of going to england . i read a lot about the whole acid house explosion and wished to have  been a part of it .

When i eventually made it to london in 97 – i was in Whitechapel for 1 night before heading for 2 months to the north east of england , in Newcastle . i was shocked as to how run down that part of london was and pretty amused at the fact that were are came from was defined as 3rd world when some of london looked so dingy. i later found these contrasts within london to be part of the charm of the city .

Why you decided to start your own party there?

I just wanted a different way of communicating to people in a more intimate way . m grandmother was a shebeen queen back in the 50’s in Sophia town . she ran a jazz shebeen . she was a great story teller and so i grew up hearing these wonderful stories about musician and poets drinking at her shebeen . this really touched me so much and i guess i wanted to continue on her legacy .

How did you decided to book the guests?

I had no money so i could not impress them by waving some money in their faces or pay their usual fees. so i had to offer something else and so i wrote to them explaining what it was i was doing , you know the whole ethos behind the night . luckily all the guests wanted to come and i formed a lot of great friendships as a result of these parties .

I also brought a lot of guests that never played before in the city and ones that had not played for like 10 yrs in the city .

Then you started your booking agency, Uzuri. You can be proud of your work, as you had some of the more valued artists of the moment in your team, such as Levon Vincent, Fred P, Magic Mountain High. How you choose the people to work with?

The agency was started in beginning of 2008 .

Honoured to work with and for these wonderful artists and it was purely on the merits of their talent that i wanted to work with them

Imagine that you have a bag with your own experiences in It. As you had a very particular life between Africa, London and Berlin, which kind of teaching you bring with you from each place?

People are the same wherever you go . we all have dreams . i guess i will teach humility and love .

Which role had music in your life, in relation to these changes?

Music is absolutely everything to me . it is my pulse  i would be lost withoout it .

Listening to your live sets is clear how your music seems rare. What kind of atmosphere do you want to create with your live sets?

I guess i love honest music and good music is like a fine wine . it ages well . and it is timeless . the atmosphere i want to create is that of being open and celebrating the differences between us as people .

You were clubber, event organizer, booking manager, dj, producer.. what we have to expect from you in the future?

hahaha – maybe a cook . i love eating and cooking so much

Last one: the records you are listening more often lately.

At home i almost never listen to 4/4 . we listen to jazz , soul , pop , new wave.. many more .

Then thank you very much Lakuti, we can’t wait to have you in Reggio Emilia!

I am looking so forward to being there and thank you for the invite .
