VII Circle is back with a journey into Deep Abyss

I knew from a fact that VII Circle were being quite perfectionist. As an anecdote i remember being told (shortly before their title “Titan” buzzed in the Brussel’s radio show mix played by Mind Against) that they were working since months secretly and aimed to get noticed (keep in mind they were totally unknown yet) by such ‘heavy weights’. And they succeeded in their plan. Stem Records (a label whose slowness to release Eps is not a secret but you have to admit the imprint spotted numerous new talents, Avatism being one early name) had signed them. The rest is “history” and i mean with that: their fanbase was born. Further on, they kept a low profile – remaining quite discrete.

One thing that always struck me in their work is their Depht and care for atmospheres.

VII Circle always pushed their music onto the scene with elegance and realness. Their sound and taste is a mixture of hypnotic — leaning toward ambient/electronic influenced — fine landscapes, where distinct emotions bloom softly (as if the world was soon going to vanish on the horizon). In the last 2 years, when it comes to dark deep techno i found myself often bored and irritated by an ocean of similar productions, more focused on fast selling than developing a proper artistic signature. I therefore rejected many of those new names blossoming, using gravy synths and copycats melodies. Instead VII’circle melodies are reduced to the strict necessary and you’ll grasp ambient, moody flesh around the ossature. The listener sinks into layers of numbness. You get ‘swallowed’ by their sound. They just do their thing. Should you like it or not, they’d probably keep on what they’re doing exactly the same way they always did. That’s what i care for. Independent thinking.

As a result when i had the opportunity to showcase them on Prior, i felt it as a chance. Not only it was quite some months (8, to be exact) we didn’t hear a new session, not only i was eager to hear new productions (yes, unreleased work of theirs is hiding in the mix) but i knew it was going to be good. Eyes closed. Prior Act may be a challenger amongst bigger channels, but the listeners base is not one you satsify easily and i’m certainly not the compromising type myself. And I wasn’t disappointed. VII Circle delivered a selection more than well thought through – almost a piece of art, where each track clearly fills its role.

At first listen, the 1H30 lenght seemed to last 45 minutes. Never boring, the mix takes time to let you drift along its variations. Besides, i was even the more happy that the tracks early installed some of my very favs producers of the moment. Reggy Van Oers, AWB, Shlomo, Prince Of Denmark (i won’t spoil the beans and prefer not to give too many clues out) are some of the names co-existing with their own material. Obsessive and cavernous but never falling into exaggerated sadness or darkness, this mix resonates like an emotional trip both into past (nostalgia) and present moment at the same time. Never falling into heaviness, it offers enough density and richness to bare several listenings and gets better at each play. In brief: an excellent indication of VII Circle’s good health. The only critic i have is that we had to wait so much time to hear from them again.
